Wazzu Pummels Pilots

The Washington State University Cougar men's hoop team were flying on cruise control through their first two victories of the 2010-11 season over Southern and Idaho, but the Cougars increased their altitude of play as junior Klay Thompson threw down 35 points and Wazzu hammered the University of Portland Pilots, 84-68 at Key Arena in Seattle. With the win, Wazzu remains undefeated on the season at 3-0 overall.

As they have done in their first two games of the season, Wazzu bolted out to an early lead, this time taking a 24-4 lead over Portland early in the first half of play. But the Pilots gradually fought back and closed the gap to 12 by halftime with the Cougars holding a 48-36 margin going into the locker room.

Portland continued their comeback attempt in the second half, closing all the way to within one point, at 57-56, with 11 minutes left in the game. But Thompson, who shot 80% from the field in the game, helped Wazzu go on a 23-4 run that quashed any further Pilot comeback notions.

Joining Thompson in double figures was junior Faisal Aden with 21 points, while fellow junior DeAngelo Casto led the Cougars with seven rebounds.

- Sophomore point guard Reggie Moore did not play due to a wrist injury and continues to be out indefinitely.
