Tuitt takes advice from Drew, visits AU

Thomasville (Ga.) four-star tight end/defensive end Ray Drew can expect at least one phone call Saturday night. It'll be from his friend and fellow top Peach State recruit Stephon Tuitt.

Tuitt, after a visit to Auburn earlier in the day, has something to say to Drew.

"I want to tell him, 'I went and liked it, too. Just like you did'," Tuitt said.

Drew is a big reason Tuitt considered a visit to Auburn. The two met at the Top Gun OL/DL camp in Williamsburg, Va. earlier this summer. Drew, Tuitt said, was one of several top recruits participating in the camp. Drew was one of several top recruits encouraging Tuitt to visit Auburn. Owings Mills (Md.) four-star offensive lineman Donovan Smith was another.

"The players I played with were all being highly recruited," said Tuitt. "Hearing it from them, knowing that they went to Auburn and had a great time, made me want to visit Auburn. It made me want to do more than just talk to them on the phone. It made me want to go there and see it for myself.

"One of the key guys that got me to visit Auburn (Drew). We ended up being best friends from the camp and we talk now. I'm going to go call him when I get home."

Tuitt, ranked the nation's No. 4 strongside defensive end and No. 5 overall recruit in Georgia, spent the afternoon in Auburn touring the campus, facilities and meeting with the coaches.

Among the coaches he met with are Gene Chizik, defensive coordinator Ted Roof and defensive line coach Tracy Rocker.

"They have wonderful coaches, great coaches and experienced coaches," Tuitt said. "(Coach Chizik) is a great guy. They are all wonderful people. (Coach Rocker) won the Lombardi Award so he knows what he's doing. Great experience from a coach like that will help you. The team looks like they have leadership, a great team with a bright future.

"It was a great, awesome experience."

Tuitt wants to visit Auburn again, and already plans to.

"I want to go back and stay a little longer, see the whole campus, be around the players, just get a chance to know more about the school and get to know the coaches better," he said. "I can't guarantee (it will be an official visit) now before I narrow down my colleges, but Auburn will have a great chance of getting one of them."

Tuitt has a long list of scholarship offers. Georgia, Georgia Tech, Auburn, Florida, Clemson, Tennessee, Notre Dame, South Carolina and North Carolina, among many more, have extended offers. Tuitt hopes to narrow the list soon.

"I have a group of schools," he said. "Georgia Tech, I like Georgia Tech. Clemson, I like (coach) Billy Napier and everything up there. I like Auburn. I like Notre Dame. I want to go up there and see what that's like. I like Miami. That is my hometown so I have little jitters about them. I'm thinking about LSU now. They are contacting me all the time. I want to see the school, check it out and see if it's a good thing. Tennessee also. I went up there yesterday and met the coaches. They are great coaches."

With many options still being considered, Tuitt said he doesn't think he'll choose one in the near future.

"I want to make sure the decision I make is the right one," he said. "I want to make sure I can go to a college and not have a bad day, wake up every morning and play for my team. I want to try to do all of my official visits, but if I already know what school I want to go to there isn't any point in doing the rest of them. That is when I'll commit.

"I don't have a date, just when it feels right to commit, I'll commit."
