GASO: Select wins NBA Red championship
DUNCANVILLE, Texas - The Houston Select and ATX Farley weren't strangers to each other Monday afternoon. The teams had played each other twice this summer, and both teams split victories.
In the third meeting - and coincidentally the matchup that determined the champion of the NBA Red Division of the Great American Shoot-Out - the Select held off a never-say-die ATX team, 74-69, at the Bob Knight Fieldhouse in Duncanville.
The Select won the first meeting against ATX earlier this summer. The second meeting took place during pool play of the GASO, and ATX won by 30. Select coach Greg Wise said his team went into the game with a slight chip on its shoulder after the embarrassing loss.
"I think [the loss] opened their eyes a little bit. They knew they had to play as a team," Wise said. "I told the guys that you can't want anymore than this. You're playing for a championship, and you're doing it against the team that beat you by 30. You can't ask for anything more."
The Select looked as though they would score a runaway victory early, as they led, 30-16, with six minutes left in the first half. ATX chopped the lead to seven in the half, and eventually went into the locker room trailing, 40-32. ATX kept the score close for the rest of the contest but couldn't get any closer than four points.
"I can't take anything from the Houston Select," ATX coach Tim Farley said. "We knew they would come out ready from the previous pool-play game. We knew we would have to fight, and we left it all on the floor."
Farley continued: "I think we got the respect now. A lot of people doubted that we could do well in this tournament."
The Select features University of Texas commitment Sheldon McClellan, who finished with 21 points on the day. Anthony Odunsi, who has verbally committed to Iowa State, added 15 for the Select. ATX's Devonte Brown led all scorers with 22 points, and teammates Karim York and Deron Belford added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
