Varnado named SEC Player of the Week
Jarvis Varnado was named the Southeastern Conference player of the week following two impressive outings, highlighted by a triple-double against Arkansas on Thursday.STARKVILLE , Miss. - All-SEC senior standout forward
In leading Mississippi State to victories against Arkansas and Georgia, the Brownsville, Tenn., native averaged 15.5 points, 13.0 rebounds and 8 blocks.
Against the Razorbacks, he scored 17 points, grabbed 12 boards and blocked 10 shots to register his second triple-double and just the fourth in school history. It was also the 20th time in SEC history the feat was accomplished, and he became just the fourth player to do it twice.
On the year, Varnado leads MSU in scoring (14.1) and rebounding (11.2). His rebounding total is also tops in the SEC and tied for ninth nationally. He also leads the nation with 96 blocks and is just 46 shy of setting an NCAA career record.
He's the second player Mississippi State player to be recognized by the SEC this season. On Dec. 14, junior guard and 3-point specialist Ravern Johnson earned player of the week honors.
The Bulldogs are 15-3 overall and lead the Western Division with a 3-0 ledger. They don't play again until they travel to Alabama on Saturday. Tip at Coleman Coliseum is set for 11 a.m., and the game will be televised by CBS.
