Endres officially starting against Louisville

STORRS, Conn. -- Cody Endres will be the starting quarterback on Saturday when UConn plays host to Louisville, UConn head coach Randy Edsall announced Tuesday.

Endres, who has started each of the past three games for UConn, replaced Zach Frazer against North Carolina when Frazer sustained a knee injury. Frazer was cleared to play in the Huskies' 24-21 loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday, but Endres remained the starter.

Edsall spoke to both players Monday and informed them of the decision.

"I think Cody has played well," Edsall said. "Look at the numbers. When you look at the numbers, he's performed very, very well. He's performed better than Zach has."

Endres has completed 55 of 83 passes (66.3 percent) with 663 yards and three touchdowns this season through four games and three starts. Frazer, named the starter prior to the season, is 22-for-43 (51.2 percent) with 221 yards and two touchdowns.

"I wouldn't say it was expected, but I was happy," Endres said. "It was a pretty brief discussion. [Edsall] called me in, told me what the deal was, told me things that I have to improve upon and you know, I took it to heart, will go out there this week, have a great week of practice and we're going to get a W, get a win. That's what it's all about."

Edsall said Frazer still looked "rusty" with regards to his performance in a walk-through on Sunday.

Frazer offered no comment on his evaluation of Endres' play during his absence, but said he has no choice other than to embrace the role.

"It's another bump in the road, but [Edsall's] the coach, you know?" Frazer said. "I've got to respect his decision. Going from starting and playing -- as a player, yeah, I want to be on the field. Everyone wants to be on the field. But I understand my role now. I've got to be prepared and be ready to go at all times."

In order for Endres to keep the job, he will need to demonstrate a greater willingness to get rid of the ball under pressure. Endres fumbled once against Pittsburgh and three times against Rhode Island on Sept. 28, though he has not thrown an interception. Frazer threw four through two games.
