Fish ready for official

The Gamecocks are looking to add a punter to this year's recruiting class, and have found one they like in Shelby (NC) Crest's Patrick Fish.

The 6-foot, 175-pounder recently found out he had an offer from South Carolina, one that stemmed from a summer camp performance.

"I was just excited," he said. "It's the best conference in football (the SEC). I know I kicked pretty good when I went down there."

The Gamecocks are not the only team showing interest in the North Carolina native.

"Gardner-Webb has offered me, and Duke is also showing a little bit of interest."

Fish will head to Columbia this weekend for his first official visit.

"I don't know much right now about South Carolina. I'm hoping to learn more when I go up there. I'm hoping to meet some of the coaches and players and I'm ready to meet coach (Steve) Spurrier."

Fish told GamecockCentral.com that he was averaging "in the low 40s" on each of his punts this season. He has an idea of what is important to him in his recruitment.

"First of all, I want a good education. South Carolina would be good for that. I'm looking for more than a football team; like a family."

There's a top three at this point for Fish, but one team is standing out above the rest.

"South Carolina is definitely up there. Duke is there too, and Gardner-Webb because it's close to home."

According to Fish, his first official visit could be his last.

"I'm not sure. It (his decision) could be this weekend, it could be a few weeks. I definitely have to see how the school is and if I like it. I'm sure I will."
