BC offense regroups

What can Kent State head coach Doug Martin and his defensive staff take from watching Boston College's offense dismantle Northeastern in a 54-0 week one win?

Not much.

"Offensively, they didn't have to show a whole lot in their game against Northeastern, but they are much more committed to the run than what they have been," Martin said.

And there's a good reason for the Eagles to lean on the running game, actually two.

First, talented running backs Josh Haden and Montel Harris combined to rush 26 times for 158 yards and three scores behind one of the top offensive lines in college football.

"They probably got three guys in there that are NFL players right now," Martin said. "Their left tackle, center and right guard I can tell you right now are all NFL offensive linemen, so this is going to be a tremendous test for our defense," Martin said.

Secondly, the Eagles are green at quarterback after Dominique Davis transferred this summer leaving redshirt freshman Jessie Tuggle and 25-year old true freshman David Shinkskie to battle for the position.

Shinskie completed 7-of-10 passes for 110 yards and one touchdown in the week one victory. Tuggle was 3-for-5 for 56 yards and a score and added 16 yards on three carries. Codi Boek and Michael Marscovetra each also saw time behind center against the Huskies.

"There's not a lot of difference between those guys. There's not one that is a different type of style," Martin said. "There's not one that's just going to go out there and run like a Michael Vick-type thing. They're all kind of in the same mode."

With two quarterbacks and two running backs to prepare for, as well as 10 different wide receivers that caught passes last weekend, the Golden Flashes have their hands full with an offense that likes to distribute the football among its playmakers.

"Traditionally these are the types of offense that we struggled a little bit against so it will be interesting to see how we have improved," Martin said. "We've got a great opportunity and look forward to showing some improvement here."

Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
