Smith making impact as true freshman
No true freshman had a bigger impact in NC State's first game than cornerback Rashard Smith. The Dublin, Ga., native played only 10 snaps, but he a sack for a nine-yard loss and electrified the crowd with a 31-yard punt return in the fourth quarter.
Smith had generated a buzz throughout preseason camp, starting with an interception in the first scrimmage. However, he did not have an inkling until shortly before kickoff against South Carolina that he would be playing.
