Defense wins fall camp scrimmage
CORVALLIS - Want proof how far the Oregon State football program has come? Look no further than Saturday's scrimmage inside Reser Stadium.
When I started attending spring games at OSU in 1992, Parker Stadium was pretty empty. Even a decade later when I was going to college there, the turnout for spring games was maybe a couple hundred.
So imagine my surprise walking into Reser today and seeing about a 1,000 spectators, most of whom were lined throughout the West Side. Keep in mind this is a fall camp scrimmage, which usually don't generate as much fanfare.
Maybe it was the beautiful sunny weather with a hint of a breeze that drew in so many spectators. Or perhaps it was a chance to see how far the Beaver quarterbacks have come because Saturday was perfect for that. However, the QB that shined most might have been a surprise.
- Pre-practice notes: Lyle Moevao was taking snaps and throwing during warm ups but didn't participate in the scrimmage. His short and mid-range passes looked fine. His deep ball was a little shakier. Other than that he appears to be making progress. Ryan Katz and Cody Vaz put some serious mustard on their throws. They can really zing it in there. Highlight of warm ups: After James Rodgers dropped an easy pass down the left sideline, he was booed by his teammates and even some fans. All in good jest though.
