Malzahn: Todd earned it

Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn wanted to choose a quarterback as quickly as possible. But he also wanted to make sure he made the right decision.

In naming Chris Todd the starter Thursday, Malzahn feels like he accomplished both goals.

"We took the whole evaluation. We wanted to be 100 percent for sure who gave us the best chance of winning," Malzahn said. "Chris Todd has been very consistent. He missed spring, but he was in there mentally. He's thrown the ball in time, and really picked up the offense on a really fast pace.

"We felt like we needed to do it right now. That gives us three good weeks and we can start developing the timing we've been talking about this whole team. He fought hard, and he won the job."

Malzahn said the timing of the decision and timing of the offense were both important factors in choosing Todd.
