A new Michael Bennett on Badger radar
Michael Bennett is a household name in Badger Country.
A former first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings and Wisconsin native, Bennett spent two years as the back-up for Ron Dayne before rushing for nearly 1,600 yards and 10 scores as a junior in 2001.
Fast-forward eight years and there may be another Michael Bennett that could potentially become part of the Badger family.
Wednesday night, BadgerBlitz.com caught up Bennett, a three-star wide receiver from Alpharetta (GA), to discuss his latest offer from the UW program.
"They (Wisconsin) offered me sometime last week," stated the 6-foot-3, 186-pound wide out. "My recruiting coach called me up and said the receivers coach really liked my film. They loved how I played and wanted to offer me.
"I think I'm actually going to go to Madison this July," he continued. "I'll be in the area for a Michigan State camp, so I plan on hitting up some of the Midwest schools that have offered me. I'm definitely going to stop by for a day. The Wisconsin offer really surprised me. I was extremely excited about that. Out of the offers I have now, they are definitely number one."
Bennett, who reported a 40-inch vertical, admits being a Big Ten fan despite living in the heart of SEC country
"I'm a huge Big Ten fan. I grew up cheering for the Spartans, actually," he said. "I'm also a pretty big Penn State fan. I love Big Ten football and Wisconsin is always contending for the Big Ten championship. I'm really looking forward to learning more about the program."
Although being heavily pursued by a number of Big Ten schools, don't be surprised if Bennett is able to land a few big-time SEC offers.
"Georgia said if I go to their camp and show that I'm a teachable player that they would probably offer," he said. "They said they loved my film and everything. Florida is very interested in me and would like me to camp, as well.
"I'll be camping at Florida, Georgia and Michigan State. Michigan State is another school that has been recruiting me real hard."
As a junior, Bennett caught 22 passes for 533 yards and five touchdowns.
