Neuheisel talks spring camp - Part I

There is a lot of work to be done by this UCLA football team this spring, but one thing that is for sure Bruin head coach, Rick Neuheisel is excited to get back to work. The following is Neuheisel's opening statement and overview of spring camp. Part two will be the Q&A part of the teleconference.

Neuheisel: "Well it is that time of year again and we are excited about it. Obviously we have a lot to get done in 15 practices and I think that obviously one of the great questions will be what's going to happen at the quarterback position. I have been on record as saying we have to play it (quarterback) better, which is entirely my feeling.

"Our plan going in is to give our young kids a lot of earl repetitions, just to see if we have a bright young star on the horizon. We have seen Kevin (Kevin Craft) and know what Kevin is capable of, certainly that's not to say we're not going to give Kevin a chance, that would be a mistake, but we want to give these young guys a couple of early opportunities to try to get their feet wet and see if they can develop into what we hope a great player at that position.

"With respect to the running back position, it's probably a similar circumstance. We've got a host of candidates for the job. Guys that are excited about their chances and will try to divide the reps up to make it meaningful for everybody, but we will do it as we see fit with respect of who is getting what and so forth.

"A lot of what we will do in terms of personnel situations will try to get maybe two tailbacks on the field at the same time in what we call pony personnel where we will have a Christian Ramirez and a Derrick Coleman on the field at the same time.
