Holland looks forward to checking out Rebels

Jake Holland doesn't know much about Ole Miss yet other than the Rebels' Southeastern Conference affiliation.

However, the 6-foot-1, 228-pound linebacker from Pelham, Ala., knows one critical piece of information about Ole Miss: The Rebels have issued a scholarship offer already.

"I don't know much," Holland said Tuesday night. "I haven't talked to them or visited there yet. I really don't know much yet. I was surprised (when Ole Miss offered). When my coach told me, I told him I haven't e-mailed them or talked to them. I did watch them a little bit year. Obviously, it's the SEC."

Holland spent this past Saturday at Auburn, and the Tigers made a very favorable impression.

"It was really cool," Holland said. "We got to know the coaches really well, toured the facility and really liked it. Basically what they said is they really need me."

Holland told earlier this week that he will be visiting Vanderbilt soon to check out one of the Commodores' spring practices.

"Hopefully I'll be able to visit Duke again," Holland said. "I'm also trying to get out to UCLA or Stanford, and definitely Ole Miss. I've never been there. I also definitely want to go back to Auburn and see them hit heads, see what the coaches are like on the field.

"I'm pretty wide open right now, but hopefully after spring practice, I'll be able to pare it down."

Holland has offers from UAB, Duke, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Auburn, UCLA, Stanford, Colorado, Kansas State and South Alabama.

Holland, who recorded 129 tackles, two interceptions and fumble recoveries at Pelham last season, said he hopes to major in engineering or a similar field of study in college. He said he'll also be "looking for a good team and I'm looking to find out when I'll be able to play."

Holland, who claims a 4.56-second 40-yard dash, said some schools are recruiting him as an inside linebacker while others believe he could contribute from the edge.

"I really don't have a favorite," Holland said. "I've played inside my whole high school career. I played a little outside linebacker and I liked it fine, but I like to be on the field, basically."
