Hood excited about SEC opportunity

During his junior season at Pickens County (Ala.) High School, Mardrecas Hood watched as his teammate Michael Williams signed a scholarship to play at Alabama.

Since that time it has been his goal to follow in Williams' footsteps and play in the Southeastern Conference. Hood got that opportunity in February when he inked a scholarship to play at Mississippi State.

"I'm very excited about playing in the SEC," Hood said. "That was a big goal for me. I wanted to follow Michael Williams and play in the SEC."

But with the former teammates playing on opposing teams in the Western Division they will square off against one another for the next four years. Williams practiced at tight end as he redshirted this past season but could be making a move to defensive end making the possibility of the two players being on the field at the same time on opposite sides of the ball.

"I really haven't thought about playing against him," Hood said. "I think they are going to either move him to tight end or defensive end. Of course we have been talking trash but he is very excited for me."

Hood was beginning to wonder if he would ever get the opportunity to play at that level. It looked as if the 6-foot-3, 180-pounder might be joining Williams in Tuscaloosa early on in the recruiting process but after a verbal offer from Alabama fell through no other suitors came along until Mississippi State and Troy joined the mix late and offered him a scholarship.
