Surprise Promotion for Jancek

One day after turning down an offer from South Florida to become its defensive coordinator, Georgia linebacker coach John Jancek has been named Georgia's co-defensive coordinator by head coach Mark Richt.

Richt made the announcement late Tuesday afternoon.

"Willie Martinez is our defensive coordinator and as co-coordinator, John has been and will continue to be instrumental in our game planning on the defensive side of the ball," Richt said in a statement.

Linebacker Rennie Curran had not heard about the promotion until he was informed by UGASports, but was pleased with the news.

"I'm definitely happy for him. He's done a lot for the program since he's been here and he's a great coach," Curran said. "There's no doubt that this is a great opportunity for him and I know he will do a great job."

Curran, who finished second in the SEC last year with 114 tackles, said he credits Jancek for his success on the field.

"He's taught me most everything I know about being a good linebacker," Curran said. "He's a great motivator, and has really helped me with my technique. He's a real asset to the program and really understands what Coach (Mark) Richt is trying to do."

Jancek is beginning his fifth season with the Bulldogs after joining the staff in 2005. He was offered the defensive coordinator position at the University of South Florida on Sunday but decided to remain with the Bulldogs. A graduate of Grand Valley State University, Jancek held defensive coordinator coaching positions at Wayne State University, Grand Valley, and Central Michigan prior to coming to Georgia.

Curran said that he's looking forward to seeing how Jancek and Martinez will work together but is confident the pairing will be a boon for the program.

"They'll do a great job. Both are real passionate about what they do. They both want to win, they both want us to play the right way, and they both are going to do everything they can to make that happen," Curran said. "But at the end of the day it isn't really going to matter who the defensive coordinator is, it's going to be up to the players, the work we put in, the work we do in the weight room … it's ultimately going to all depend on us."
