North Miami Beach product decides on FIU
Coach Mario Cristobal and his coaching staff got a major coup when they got a commitment from North Miami Beach High School linebacker Markeith Russell. Russell is the second player to commit to FIU from North Miami Beach along Jonathan Cyprien.
"I committed this Monday," said Russell. "It is a great opportunity for me it is a rebuilding program and they are way ahead of schedule. They want me to go ahead and put a foot print in their program. I can stay home and work hard and show kids in my neighborhood and my little brothers that if you work hard you can see brighter days."
What schools did your decision come down to?
"I took a visit Western Michigan and it really came down to those two (FIU and Western Michigan). Both of them were a great opportunity for me in their program."
Are you visiting with your teammates that FIU is recruiting Nico Flores and Kemal Ishmael?
"I was originally scheduled to visit with them next weekend but I moved my visit up to this weekend. I wanted to give them the same opportunity I gave Western Michigan and let them see what the program is all about on their own. I just wanted them to worry about having fun and not me pressuring them."
Will your decision have an affect on them?
"I don't know, but I sure hope so. We would love to play together, but our coach said not to think about that."
Russell was a 2nd team All-Dade county selection this fall. Although Russell projects as an outside linebacker in college he rushed for 565 yards and 9 touchdowns this season.
