Hornung starts season strong

The Colorado State basketball coaching staff stayed local when filling some of its needs for the 2009-10 basketball season, recruiting Pierce Hornung out of Aurora. Colorado State Coach Tim Miles got a commitment from the 6-foot-5, 200-pound Hornung after he averaged 19 points, 11 rebounds and five assists per game last season for Ralston Valley. Hornung chose Colorado State over Denver University, Utah State, Montana, Air Force and Northern Arizona.

"Pretty much everybody in my family goes to Colorado State," Hornung said. "My dad played football there, my brother goes there now, but that isn't why I committed. I really liked Coach Miles and their whole system, the conference and everything really worked out well."

He said he is more of a driver than a perimeter shooter from the wing and is averaging 13.2 points per game this season for Ralston Valley, which is 6-2 overall using a varied offensive scheme.

We take what we can, but we do a lot of running," Hornung said. "We focus a lot on half court offense too. Defensively we run a man."

Ralston Valley's season is about to heat up as a contest with a Lincoln team that bounced RV from the state playoffs the past two seasons. While the high school basketball season is keeping Hornung busy, he said he is following the Colorado State basketball season.

"I've been to one game so far - it was the UNC game and they played pretty well," Hornung said. "They ended up winning. As far as any other games, they have caught some tough breaks, but they are playing pretty well. I just trying to come in and do whatever Coach Miles tells me to do."

Right now Hornung said he is planning on coming to Fort Collins early to attend summer school to get some requirements out of the way. He said he is also in contact with his fellow recruiting class of Trevor Williams, Devin McDonald and Greg Smith.

"We're definitely hoping we can contribute right away and help this program turn around," Hornung said.
