Bulldogs blown out in Egg Bowl

OXFORD, Miss., - The 2008 season came to an embarrassing close Saturday with a 45-0 rout by in-state rival Ole Miss, their worst Egg Bowl loss since 1971.

The Bulldogs seemed outmatched from the start falling behind 24-0 in the opening quarter and things continued downhill from there. MSU finished the game with -51 yards rushing and were sacked 11 times by the Rebels.

"Congratulations to Coach (Houston) Nutt and his football team," said Bulldog head coach Sylvester Croom. "They came in here with the idea that they were going to kick our rear ends and they did that from start to finish. Why what happened today occurred, I'm sorry to say is a mystery to me. We were challenged from the time the game started and we didn't respond with the kind of intensity that I would expect our football team to respond with. To say the least, I didn't see that one coming."

Ole Miss , who improved to 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the Southeastern Conference, reclaimed the Golden Egg Trophy and put up 461 yards of offense in the process. The Rebels finished the game with a balanced attack of 241 yards passing and another 220 on the ground.

"From the very first moment and first series we executed," Nutt said. "For the last four of five weeks we have put points on the board and pressure on the defenses and kept them off balance. I was proud of Jevan (Snead because he didn't practice most of the week as far as throwing. He had tremendous focus and wanted to win for the seniors. We have some playmakers."

Snead completed 14-of-19 passing for 213 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.
