Frederick ready for Camp Randall
Four of Wisconsin's five current in-state recruits were alive when the WIAA state tournament began in late October. A little over a month later, that group has dwindled down to two, with offensive lineman Travis Frederick and his Big Foot teammates still competing for the Division 4 crown later this afternoon.
The following is a question and answer with Frederick hours before his big game at Camp Randall:
What are your thoughts about playing for a state championship at Camp Randall?
Frederick: The whole team is definitely excited. I've been watching a lot of film and the team has been watching a lot of film. I think we're ready and just really excited to go out there at play at Camp Randall.
Obviously you'll be playing your college ball in Madison and Camp Randall. It will be your home away from home.
Frederick: Yeah, I'm really excited to get up there. It's really neat that I'll be able to finish my high school career on the turf. I'll be playing at Camp Randall next year, but I think it's cool that my teammates and friends will get a chance to play there with me.
What do you know about your opponent (Wautoma/Faith Christian)? Did anything stick out while watching film?
Frederick: Oh yeah, they are a really solid team. Their quarterback basically runs the show; they like to run the option. They have three running backs that have significant rushing yards, but the quarterback accounts for 61 percent of the offense. So we definitely need to stop him. They also have a very good lineman that we've heard great things about. He's a very good athlete, so we will need to contain him as well. We are excited for the challenge.
Let's switch gears and talk a little bit about Wisconsin. Do you still plan on graduating early?
Frederick: Yes, actually Dec. 19 will be my last day of high school.
Are you getting excited, nervous, or a little of both?
Frederick: A little of both, it's definitely a great opportunity for me. It will be an eye-opening experience. I'm really looking forward to it.
Last time we spoke, it was still up the air as to what your position will be. Has the staff been able to give you a more specific answer?
Frederick: The staff basically divides the offensive line to "inside" and "outside." I was told I'll be an inside player, which means I'll be playing either guard or center when I get on campus. One of those two positions is where you can most likely find me in the future.
Do you have any thoughts about that? Is that where you thought you'd end up?
Frederick: Absolutely. That's where I figured I'd end up. I think I can move my feet pretty well. I like getting out in space and I like pulling, so that's a great spot for me.
You mentioned you like to pull and get in space. That said, what else can you bring to the table as an offensive lineman?
Frederick: I think I have pretty good strength going in, which is to my advantage. Obviously I can't wait until I get on the strength program and beef up to their standards. Yeah, I feel my initial size and strength coming in will be to my advantage. Also, I think I can move pretty well out in space and on the edge. I'm going to come and play as well as I can, but I still have a lot to learn.
