Sam hearing from Colorado State
Hitchcock High School (TX) linebacker Michael Sam's name is coming up more and more in recruiting circles. The 6'3", 230-pounder has collected 5.5 sacks this season to go along with his four scholarship offers, including one from the Colorado State Rams.
Sam's season was interrupted by Hurricane Ike, which spared his home, but did knock him out of bed one night. All things considered, he feels lucky his neighborhood was spared.
"It (our house) did good, just some branches in the yard," said Sam. "Down the highway about two miles, the whole neighborhood got destroyed."
This season the class 2A Hitchcock football is 3-1 overall with one loss on the season to class 5A power Chavez of Houston. Hitchcock is ranked fifth in the state for their efforts. Last week Hitchcock posted a 42-14 in over Vanvleck, in which Sam had a pair of sacks and a 47-yard touchdown on a fumble recovery. The week before he scored two points on a blocked extra point. It is plays like those that have college football coaches finding their way to south Texas for an audience with Sams.
Thus far Sam claims offers from Arizona State, Houston, Colorado State, Iowa State and says Oklahoma has told him they will offer. Currently, Sam has lined up a visit to Iowa State for October, trying to get something lined up to come to Fort Collins in December, and is looking at the rest of his options for visit dates.
"Right now,we are still in football season, so I am not going to make any big time decisions until it gets close to the end," Sam said. "I want to stay focused on my senior year. I love the offers. I am going to go to a school that offers me."
Sam said he will be the first one in his family to go to college. Right now his primary contact with the Colorado State coaching staff is Coach Scott Brown.
"I hear from Coach Brown every week," Sam said. "He said I would be playing defensive end over there. He has set me up with a visit sometime in December. They want me to play and keep on sending me stuff. I'm interested in them."
Currently, the only school to have offered him a scholarship that isn't in the picture is Houston University, which he says is just too close to home.
Sam currently holds a 3.1 GPA and has not taken the ACT after Hurricane Ike forced the cancellation of the test's administration last month. He also holds a bench press max of 260, a squat of 630 and a 625 dead lift.
