TE gets offer, talks visit

Brentwood, Tenn. (Brentwood Academy) prospect Thad McHaney was expecting an offer after he attended Ole Miss' senior camp in late July and that offer came through as expected.

"I got the offer a couple of weeks after the camp," McHenry said on Tuesday. "I didn't work out at the camp because of a hamstring injury, but I did get a chance to talk with most of the coaches.

McHaney, 6-foot-5, 240 pounds, is listed as a tight end prospect, but is also being recruited by some schools as a defensive end and outside linebacker.

He currently holds offers from Ole Miss, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Louisville, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Oregon, and Marshall. He also recently added an offer from UCLA.

"I got to talk to coach (Kent) Austin, and also met with some of the other coaches including coach (Tracy) Rocker and (defensive coordinator) coach (Tyrone) Nix," McHenry said. "I also talked with coach (Houston) Nutt for a few minutes."

While McHaney wasn't able to participate in any camps this summer due to a hamstring that was pulled during track event, it didn't stop him from making the rounds to visit several schools that have offered.

Those trips included stops at Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Louisville, and Ole Miss.

McHaney is being recruited by Ole Miss offensive coordinator Kent Austin, a Brentwood Academy alumnus who played quarterback for the Rebels more than 20 years ago. Austin is credited with the current recruitment of Ole Miss verbal commitments Clayton Moore and Morristown, Tenn. linebacker Demarcus Knight.

"He's really a good guy and I like that we can talk about anything," McHaney said. "A couple of my coaches at Brentwood know him and they speak really high of him and say he's a good person."

Previous reports have McHaney having some early leaders, or narrowing his list down to a top three or five in early September.

However, on Tuesday, McHaney said he hasn't done that yet and is currently pretty much wide open.

In addition to the senior camp, McHaney also made a trip to Ole Miss for the LSU game last fall.

"It was really a good, positive atmosphere," McHaney said. "I liked the fact that the team may have lost, but the fan support was still there."

While McHaney doesn't have a top five, he does plan to make a return to Oxford later this fall.

"I'd like to go on an official visit to Ole Miss," McHaney. "I don't have a date set up yet and don't know if it would be during the season or afterwards, but I would like to go back down there."

McHaney is ranked the No. 13 overall recruit in Tennessee by and also rated by as the No. 28 tight end in the country.
