Will WR, Walker become the next Army commit?

It appears that wide receiver prospect Mike Walker is getting closer to making his college decision and although he is receiving interest from a number of colleges, Army seems to be the heavy favorite. "He received an e-mail and letter from a West Point admissions officer last week," shares Walker's dad, Dave Walker. "They opened an official admissions file and he is completing all the paperwork. On Friday, he received his papers for the medical physical and we are setting up the appointments now. I have overheard him telling his friends that he is 99% certain he going to Army."

But as college recruiting goes, even verbal commitments or strong leans from a recruit don't prevent other schools from starting or continuing their recruiting efforts. And although it appears that Walker is a solid lean towards the Black Knights, there suitors still knocking on the door. "Recently, he received several letters from Coach Niumatalolo at Navy," shares the senior Walker. "They (Navy) have invited him to come to a game and they want him to see the campus. He still has a lot of interest from one Big 12 school and two Big 10 schools, plus the Mountain West guys."

Side Note:

Fox Sports Southwest announced they will televise (live) Walker's high school teams' (Westlake) third game of the season against the Lake Travis Cavaliers. The game will be played Thursday, September 4th at 7:00pm. It will be a sell out - Westlake's stadium holds approximately 11,000. It still is to be determined if the game will televised regionally or nationally.

Westlake is 5A and the 2006 5A State Finalists, while Lake Travis is 4A, who competed in last year's 4A State Champions. It should be a good battle with many big time recruits on both sides of the ball. The Lake Travis QB is five-star rated and University of Texas commit, Garrett Gilbert and Walker's teammate and Westlake's featured running back Ryan Swope, is a Texas A&M commit.

The schools are very near each other and these young men have been friends with each other since their Pop Warner days. Right now, it appears that Westlake has the upper hand, where they have beaten Lake Travis the last two years - it should be quite a shoot out.

With such a game, there has been a lot press lately about the Westlake Chaps and how loaded the team is this year. It has generated new interest in a number of prospects, including Walker and a whole new request for films and resumes. As one of the captains, he has been in several interviews on the field and has been asked where he will play next year.

Walker and his teammates had their first controlled pre-season scrimmage Saturday morning against Hays High School south of Austin. Westlake won 7-0 and Walker caught a 20-yard pass with 17 seconds to go for a first down. He went out of bounds to stop the clock and then he caught another 20 yard pass for a touchdown with 12 seconds left.
Clearly Walker is getting off on the right foot.

Look for Walker to make his decision relatively soon and look for to bring it to you when it happens.
