WVSports.com's preseason breakdown: Linebackers

West Virginia lost seven starters on defense in January. Seniors Reed Williams and Mortty Ivy will be asked to lead from the linebacker position.

Williams assumes Marc Magro's role as the defense's homegrown heart. The Moorefield native became a full-time middle linebacker last season after splitting time on the strong-side during his sophomore year.

Williams ranked No. 6 in the Big East averaging more than eight tackles-per-game. His sack and forced fumble on Oklahoma's Sam Bradford during the Fiesta Bowl's opening drive spurred the Mountaineers. Nine stops and two tackles for loss added to a victorious performance that earned MVP honors on defense.
