UAB Looking at Linebacker

UAB is interested in recruiting a 6-5, 210 pound linebacker/defensive end from Briarwood. That player is keeping his options open, but UAB is still in the running.

Briarwood's Walter May has already received offers from UAB, Arkansas State, South Alabama, and Liberty. Meanwhile, three SEC schools - Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Vanderbilt - have also shown interest in the star senior. Toss in looks from Citadel, Furman, and the Air Force Academy, and you've got a total of ten universities interested in recruiting the youngster.

May, though, is not committing to anybody. "I'm neutral on everybody right now," he said. "I'm going to wait and see how everything pans out."

His immediate task is recovering from an ankle injury. He twisted the ankle in his high school spring game, and hasn't been able to work out as much as he would like. "I'm about 80 percent now," he said.

When healthy, May considers his speed his best asset. His has been officially timed at 4.6 in the 40, but says he has hit the 4.4 mark on two occasions.

May has made no official visits yet, but he has been on a campus or two with "Junior Day" trips to Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.

He also made on trip to UAB to watch one practice. His ankle injury kept him out of the Blazers' prospect camp, but - after taking the ACT last Saturday - he drove down to the camp to say hello to Neil Callaway and the other Blazer coaches.

Ultimately, May noted, his decision will be based on "the coaches and academics. "I've got to like the school, and not for football reasons. I've got to like being there even if I'm not playing football."

UAB, he added, fits that basic criteria. "The coaching staff is great, and the school is a really good school," he said.

Still, he's in no hurry to make a choice. "I'm probably going to wait until after the season to make a decision.," he said. "If something came along that was just great, I might decide early, but right now I'm thinking I'll wait until after the season.
