USC adds another four-star
The spring has seen St. Matthews (S.C.) Calhoun County wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey's stock skyrocket. An MVP performance at the UNC Nike Camp, impressive measurables and natural athleticism have colleges from around the country intrigued by this raw but talented four-star recruit. On Monday, Jeffrey ended the race for a number of schools and committed USC, the West Coast version.
"Alshon committed [to Southern California] yesterday afternoon," confirmed Jeffrey's head coach Dwayne Wages.
There had been serious communication for some time between Jeffrey and the Southern California coaching staff but an official offer hadn't come until very recently. When the offer did come, it was only a matter of time for the two-sport star.
"Early on they kind of gave him a verbal because Southern Cal has a little higher standards admissions-wise and at the time when they first started recruiting him it would have been an admissions issue," Wages explained. "He's done very well in the classroom and at the end of the school year they asked for his new transcript. After they got it they went ahead and offered."
Following the official offer, Jeffrey had planned to camp at USC on June 24th, but as it turned out the fluid athlete couldn't wait that long to declare himself a Trojan.
"To be honest, his recruitment was going to come down to we're going to visit on the 24th. I knew that if everything checked out he was going to do it then but he went ahead and did it. He's done his research. He knows he's going to be far away but that was his No. 1 choice from the get go. He loves Southern Cal and what they bring to the table."
Jeffrey also was affected by the relationship he has developed with the coaching staff at USC.
"He loves coach Morton," his head coach continued. "They've done a good job of closing the gap as far as the distance. Him and Coach Carroll have a good relationship too."
Jeffrey is a four-star prospect and the No. 16 wide receiver in the country.
