Ball scheduled for Madison visit
Though his primary ties rest in Kansas and Florida, newly appointed defensive coordinator Dave Doeren-arguably the top recruiting assistant on the Wisconsin staff-has been exploring some new territory in his efforts to recruit the 2009 class.
Recently, the former recruiting coordinator began work in the Missouri area in his efforts to land Montee Ball, a 5-foot-11, 210-pound running back from Wentzville (MO) Timberland, who was recently offered a scholarship from the Badgers.
"Right now it's pretty early but I know he's (Doeren) a pretty good guy, that's why I'm going to keep calling him here and there," Ball told BadgerBlitz.com Tuesday night. "I'm actually going to go up there and visit the school in like a week or so. I'm going to visit and get to see and talk to Coach Doeren face to face."
The Badger offer came on the heels of a strong performance at last Sunday's one-day camp at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo.
"I just recently got offers from Wisconsin and Indiana," said Ball, who rushed for 3,077 yards and 32 scores as a junior. "I have seven offers now, Kansas, Missouri, Northwestern, Iowa State, Stanford, Wisconsin and Indiana."
A school rich in running back tradition, Doeren is pushing that idea to UW's newest tailback target.
"They tell me it's a running back school and obviously it is," said Ball, who carries a 3.5 GPA. "One advantage of it, the running backs there have a good shot of making it to the NFL. I like the style of offense they run and it's a pretty good fit for me right now.
Right now, me and my parents are sitting down and trying to decide where things are going to fit in. Right now, we just know that we're going to visit the school and then decide on camps later."
Ball noted that staying close to home would not play a huge factor in his decision, something the junior would like to get out of the way before or during his final prep season.
"Toward the middle or the beginning of the season I'd like to get the decision out of the way," he said.
In addition to Ball, Wisconsin has made (known) scholarship offers to Stephan Taylor, Brandon Wegher, Pat Hinkel and Donald Russell.
