Back from surgery, Berry leads D-line
MORGANTOWN--He isn't the first defender to be duped by Noel Devine, and he certainly won't be the last. When West Virginia University defensive end Scooter Berry grabbed the Mountaineers' diminutive tailback around the waist in the end zone during Saturday's scrimmage, it seemed that Berry had recorded a safety for the WVU defense. Not so fast.
Just as the 6-foot-2, 285-pound Berry, almost in afterthought, prepared to toss his prey to the turf, it somehow managed to squirm free. Before anyone in attendance knew what had happened, Devine emerged from the pack of big eaters congregated in the end zone and suddenly squirted into the Mountaineers' secondary. Although Devine was eventually forced out of bounds 30 yards later, Berry immediately heard a familiar mantra being shouted in his direction by an assortment of WVU coaches: "The play isn't over until the whistle blows!"
After the scrimmage, Berry had his own explanation for why Devine escaped his grasp unscathed.
