Several Mountaineers favor ex-assistant Butch Jones

Were it left up to several West Virginia receivers-past and present-Butch Jones would be the new head football coach at WVU.

As it is, Jones, currently the head man at Central Michigan, is preparing his Mid-American Conference champion Chippewas (8-5) to meet Purdue, Wednesday, on ESPN in the annual Detroit Motor City Bowl (7:30 p.m. ET).

Jones' club, which opened at 1-3 this season, interviewed for the job to replace Rich Rodriguez at least one time last week, along with John (Doc) Holliday of Florida, Terry Bowden, the head coach at Auburn from 1993-98; Rick Trickett, the assistant head coach at Florida State; Jimbo Fisher, the head-coach-in-waiting at FSU, and Mike Locksley, the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Illinois.
