Late score lifts LSU over Auburn
Auburn's Jerraud Powers couldn't have been in much better position. The sophomore DB was there, stride-for-stride with LSU receiver Demetrius Byrd.
As the last seconds of the game ticked off the clock, LSU QB Matt Flynn hurled a pass down the left sideline. Powers turned to find the ball.
"When I got in position to cut him off I had my hand pressed on him, and as soon as I turned my head to look at the ball it was already in there," said Powers. "I had my hand on it and I went to rip it out at the end, but he made a heck of a play."
Groves, who missed the last two games with dislocated toes, said he was about 90 percent against LSU.
"I limped around for a couple of plays," he said. "The trainers did a good job of getting me back and I felt pretty good. I should be 100 percent by next week."
***With freshman Ryan Pugh nursing an ankle in injury, senior King Dunlap started at left tackle. Dunlap started AU's first three games before being replaced by Pugh.
***After beginning the game with a 33-yard punt, Ryan Shoemaker was replaced by Patrick Tatum. Tatum punted twice in the first half for a 46-yard average before being replaced by Shoemaker at the start of the third quarter. Shoemaker boomed his first punt for 52 yards and finished the game with a 42.0 average on five punts.
***Auburn's 90-yard drive in the second quarter that resulted in Wes Byrum's 22-yard field goal was the Tigers' second-longest drive of the season. Auburn had a 92-yard drive against Vanderbilt.
*** With 199 yards passing, Cox moved past Dameyune Craig into fourth in Auburn history in career passing with 6,142 yards. With a pair of TD passes, Cox moved into a tie for fourth with Craig with 39 career touchdown passes. He is one behind Stan White for a tie for third.
***Freshman QB Kodi Burns got in for one play in the second quarter, rushing for one yard on a first-and-10 on the LSU 13-yard line.
***Starting slot WR Robert Dunn did not travel with the team for the LSU game due to a violation of team practice rules. Redshirt freshman Tim Hawthorne started his first career game in place of Dunn but did not register a catch.
***Freshman Chris Slaughter took over Dunn's punt returning duties but didn't return a punt against LSU.
Auburn (5-3, 3-2) hosts Ole Miss (2-6, 0-5) next Saturday.
