Shannon: We don't accept losing

Coach Randy Shannon spoke more today about the fallout from UM's home loss to Georgia Tech.

"The guys we've got on this team came to the University of Miami because they want to win games," Shannon said. "We don't accept losing. The coaches and myself are harder on the players than anybody can ever be on them. They tried to get back, make plays, but playing guys at different positions, younger guys, inconsistency is going to be there. I don't make excuses. Guys need to step up. It's a challenge they have to step up to and us coaches have to keep them focused, keep being positive with them but also make sure they understand we're at this point right now. You can quit, but in our minds we're not going to quit on this team or this program. We have a lot of football left. We have to keep focused and go on."

Shannon said he won't discuss the upcoming Florida State game until he reviews tape of the Seminoles.

"I haven't watched it yet," he said. "You have to take it one game at a time."

Asked if UM-FSU is still a big national rivalry with both teams struggling, Shannon said, "It's on TV still. Something's special about it. No matter what it's going to be Miami-Florida State, Florida-Florida State, Michigan-Ohio State, USC-UCLA, USC-Notre Dame, Texas-Oklahoma, Florida-Georgia, Alabama-Auburn. They are what they are. Those are going to be the same rivalries. Everybody likes those games because they're good games.

"It's a good, sound rivalry that you'll have a great time with."

Shannon says he isn't giving up on this year's team.

"I still think we can win this year," he said. "We're 4-3. We have some tough games ahead of us, but I think we can win them. We have to keep playing hard. A break will come for us eventually if we keep playing the way we are. We have to. Are we going to win the national championship this year? No. Now, we can win out and maybe we go 9-3. That's just me. I'm not making a statement or prediction. That's just how I think. Do I think we can beat Florida State? Yes. But that's not saying Florida State's not a good team. They're a good team. That's just how I feel about this football team. People say `Well, you're rebuilding.' I can't accept that. That's my mentality."

In injury news, Shannon said Dwayne Hendricks "is probably going to be out for a while." He said Lance Leggett is "out for a little bit longer." He says Colin McCarthy should be ready for FSU. McCarthy suited up but did not play due to a concussion, with Darryl Sharpton joining Spencer Adkins and Tavares Gooden as starters.
