In carnage of Stanford loss -- USC talks and talks

USC held its first practice in the carnage of Saturday's stunning loss to Stanford, minus John David Booty.

Booty's right middle finger, with its fractured tip, was in a splint. He did not participate in Monday's drills and said the finger - which suffered a clean break and did not need to be set - has swelled up and gotten stiff, since the end of Saturday's game.

He will try to grip a football Tuesday, and - if he can throw - would begin to evaluate how much the finger hampers his capabilities.

"It's just day to day," Booty said. "Come out here tomorrow and see how it feels, and do the same Wednesday and Thursday."

Booty's finger and his performance (24-for-40 for 364 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions) were among the many topics discussed in Monday's post-mortem on a USC nightmare.

Here's a bit on the injury:

  • Booty, on the finger and throwing with it this week: "I'm sure it's going to hurt; it's going to be sore; it's going to be all of those things. It's just a matter of, 'Can I throw with it?' I can take the pain for the most part. It's just a matter of, 'Am I accurate with velocity on the ball?"

  • Booty, on what it would take for him to sit Saturday against Arizona: "I think not giving my team a good chance to win, the best chance to win. If I feel like I can't throw the ball over 15 yards, then I probably shouldn't be out there. But if I still feel like I can compete, and I can throw the ball accurately and with some velocity, then I think I can play."
