Smelley sidelined for another week

Tommy Beecher will remain Blake Mitchell's primary backup for Saturday's game against South Carolina State and, possibly, beyond.

Chris Smelley, who started the season opener at quarterback, could be sidelined with a sprained shoulder longer than team doctors initially thought, South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier said Wednesday night following the Gamecocks' two-hour practice on the Bluff Road practice fields.

"His shoulder is still bothering him," Spurrier said. "I think it's a little more serious injury than they first thought. So he's out this week also. He's not playing this week. It's just a little sprained shoulder that hasn't come back yet."

USC will enter the S.C. State game with the same group of quarterbacks they took with them to Athens for the Georgia game - Mitchell, Beecher and freshman Stephen Garcia.
