Defense prepares for battle

Coming into the 2007 season the defense was the known commodity for the Bearcats. In a 59-3 beating of S.E. Missouri St. the defense didn't get much of a test, nor did the fans for the new style of defense the Bearcats have this season.

On defense, UC returns seven starters from a unit that ranked in the top-25 nationally against the run. That unit will get a big test Thursday when Yvenson Bernard and the Oregon State Beavers come to town.

Bernard comes into the game as OSU's third all-time leading rusher behind Steven Jackson and Ken Simonton, and is coming off a 165-yard two touchdown performance last week against Utah.

Despite the presence of such a back in the Oregon State backfield, defensive end Angelo Craig said the defense isn't doing anything different in its preparations.

"No, just trying to get all 11 guys to the football every play and trusting that each of us will make the tackle," Craig said.

Cincinnati not only faces a tough running back, but an offensive line built more like a Big-10 line than a Pac-10 one. The Beavers o-line averages 306 lbs across their front five.
