QB Watch: A game-time decision

Anyone looking for a quick answer on Pitt's starting quarterback would be well-advised to give up the hunt, as head coach Dave Wannstedt said on Wednesday that even the two combatants, Kevan Smith and Pat Bostick, will have to wait until the Panthers host Grambling State on Saturday to find out.

"I've pretty much made up my mind that it's going to be a game-time decision," Wannstedt said before practice. He and offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh are spending this week looking at Smith and Bostick, evaluating the two to determine the best replacement for junior Bill Stull, who underwent surgery on his right (throwing) thumb over the weekend.

Smith is a redshirt freshman and Bostick is a true freshman, and Wannstedt said that the decision is being put off at least partly due to the players' youth.

"If you're deciding between a veteran guy and a freshman, it's pretty easy: if they're both close, early in the week you name the veteran guy, give him some confidence and go. In this case we're dealing with two freshmen.

"When you're dealing with young kids, you don't want to affect either one, and I think you have to be careful that when you name a starter that the other guy doesn't get…down because it's more than likely that you're going to be playing both of them anyway. So I think that the best way to go about it is to take our time through the practices and the meetings and have them both ready to play. And then make a decision and see how it goes."
