QB Watch: Either way, it will be a freshman

Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt has a decision to make this week when he chooses whether Kevan Smith or Pat Bostick will start at quarterback for the Panthers' home game against Grambling State on Saturday. But while the conventional wisdom would be to go with the upperclassman, Wannstedt doesn't have that option available to him.

"Either one's going to be a freshman; we don't have a choice now," Wannstedt said Tuesday. "I don't think any coach on any level would want to, if he had a choice, put a freshman on the field. But we're going to do that."

Of course, that's not entirely accurate, since Smith is a redshirt freshman and Bostick is a true freshman. But as the two compete to replace junior Bill Stull, who is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery to repair ligament damage in his thumb, they're each working with minimal experience. Smith holds the duo's lone collegiate appearance, having filled in for Stull in the final quarter of the Eastern Michigan game after he suffered the injury to his thumb.

"The plan is that Kevan Smith and Pat Bostick will both work equal as far as the practice-time repetitions," Wannstedt said, "and then [offensive coordinator] Matt Cavanaugh and I will make a decision at the end of the week as far as who's the starter.
