The evolution of Adam Weber

Since the end of spring practice in early April Adam Weber has gone from confusion with a new offensive system to the number one quarterback. Weber clearly grew as a player from the end of spring to the end of pre-season practices. His evolution continued throughout his first game on Saturday night. After a disastrous first half, Weber stepped back on to the field for the second half and led his team back from 21 points down only to see it all fall apart on the final play of the game.

Coming out of spring ball, Weber admitted that he was struggling to grasp the new spread offense the offensive coordinator Mike Dunbar was installing. By the time fall camp was two weeks from completion it was clear to most observers that Weber would be the starting quarterback for the Golden Gophers in 2007. "At this particular time, Adam Weber gives us the best chance to win." Head coach Tim Brewster said. "He's done an outstanding job of becoming a student of the game, understanding the offense better every day. We think he has excellent talent, we think we can win with him."

Despite high praise from the staff and his fellow players the Adam Weber era did not get off to the kind of start he wanted. He completed his first three passes, but made several key mistakes in the opening half against Bowling Green. He fumbled a center exchange and threw an interception, both coming after plays that were building momentum for the Gophers. Despite what it may have looked like, Weber insists it was not nerves that led to his poor play in the first half. "I tired not to think to much about the game before hand, I did not get to nervous before hand." Weber said after the game. "We did not bring the right intensity, I did not bring the right intensity as a quarterback I was new out there, I was a little green. As time went on and I took a few hits things settled into place. It was more of a lack of knowing how the game was going to go more than anything. It was frustrating because I was not doing what I was supposed to do and we were not executing like I know we could. It took awhile to get used to the speed and the size of the game."
