QB Intrigue Grows As Georgia Week Begins
Steve Spurrier says he needs a few days to decide who South Carolina's starting quarterbacks will be for Saturday's showdown at Georgia.
Tommy Beecher already knows.
Graciously defusing a potential quarterback controversy after helping lead USC to a 28-14 season-opening victory over Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday night, Beecher said the right man for the job is fifth-year senior Blake Mitchell, suspended for the first game due to excessive absences from summer school classes.
"We're all looking forward for Blake to get back out there," Beecher said. "He's a leader, like I've said many times. We're looking forward to seeing him play. I hope I'm in the mix. I think Coach Spurrier will see how we do in practice this week and then make a decision. Either way, I'm fine with it. He's the coach. If it's my role to be the backup or third strong quarterback, that's what I'll do."
But Beecher and Chris Smelley certainly threw their names into the hat with steady performances against the pesky Ragin' Cajuns before a crowd of over 78,000 fans at Williams-Brice Stadium.
It could be interesting few days until Spurrier formally announces later this week who his starting quarterback will be.
