Reed is a Special Teams whiz!

The Texas Tech football program has had numerous illustrious return men in its modern history. In the 70s there was a guy by the name of Lawrence Williams who roasted opponents with regularity.

In the 80s, Idalou product and ball-hawking safety extraordinaire Tracy Saul additionally made a tremendous name for himself as a punt returner. That decade also witnessed mighty mite Tyrone Thurman razzling and dazzling his way to All America honors as a returner of both kickoffs and punts.

Then, in the oughts came the Incomparable One, Wes Welker. He broke hearts and triggered heart attacks in a magnificent onslaught on school, Big 12 and NCAA record books, and now returns the ball and catches it for the New England Patriots.

Since Welker's departure, however, there has been a bit of a dry spell both in terms of superstar return men and in special teams coverage. Whether or not that lull vanishes with the 2007 season remains to be seen. One man who has the potential to improve general fortunes in this area, however, is wide receiver L.A. Reed.

The junior from Conroe has been somewhat hamstrung by injury and other medical issues during his first two seasons in Raiderland but now looks to be fit as a fiddle and ready to shove.
