Spearman commitment a big one

In landing a commitment from Greenwood's Jay Spearman, the Carolina Gamecocks tapped into one of the top high school programs in the Palmetto State for what could be the top overall athlete in class of 2008. The 6-foot-1, 192-pound standout is a versatile player capable of playing a number of different positions on the collegiate level. In today's column, we take a look at what Spearman's commitment means to the USC program.

When Spearman joins the Gamecock football program in the fall of 2008, he will be the second member of the Spearman family and the latest in a long line of Greenwood High School standouts to play at South Carolina. He join his uncle, offensive lineman Andray Spearman, and former standouts like receiver Robert Brooks, defensive tackle Marty Dye, offensive lineman Ernest Dye, defensive backs Tyler Hellams and Robert Perlotte, and linebacker Ricardo Hurley.
