McVay involved in Tech's latest commit
Sometimes the recruiting business is all about connections and who you know. In this case, Texas Tech's Director of Football Operations Tommy McVay can be credited with the connection and knowing the source that has helped Tech land it's latest commitment.
In 1975, McVay was the head coach of Derby High School in Derby, Kansas when the Panthers finished the year with state-runner up honors. The quarterback of that team was a senior by the name of Duane Howard. Neither Howard nor McVay knew at the time that Howard would be calling McVay about a football prospect over 25 years later.
McVay's phone rang two months ago with Howard on the other end. He wanted to tell him the story about his son, Daniel Howard.
Howard had just finished his second year playing defensive end at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas and was looking for a chance at the Division-IA level.
Out of high school, Daniel was small for a defensive end (6-foot-1, 190-pounds) and knew that a community college would be the best route.
