Offensive Breakdown; Grothe Q&A

  • Player of the Game: Matt Grothe was the player of the game for 409 reasons. Grothe passed for a school-record 364 yards and two scores. He added 45 yards on eight carries for a total of 409 total yards. Grothe also set personal career highs for passes attempted (35) and passes completed (25). He used the entire field and spread the ball around, hooking up with 10 different receivers. Are we sure this kid's a freshman?

  • Offensive Turning Point: With a little more than two minutes remaining in the third quarter and USF clinging to a 13-3 lead, Grothe found Taurus Johnson over the middle. Johnson beat his defender, made the catch and turned on the speed en route to a 79-yard, game-clinching touchdown. Credit also has to go to the offensive line, which picked up an all-out blitz by Syracuse on the play to give Grothe the extra time he needed.

  • Offensive Key Stats: 514 total yards of offense, 7-for-13 on third down conversions and two records.
