Top hoops recruits set to visit Vandy this weekend

The NCAA's early signing period is six weeks away--the week of November 8 through 15--but the quality of Vanderbilt's recruiting class will be determined in the next two weeks.

The Commodores have an SEC-high six scholarships to offer in this class, and coach Kevin Stallings has filled the next three weekends with official visits from all of their top prospects.

The concentrated number of visitors in a short period of time results from a quirk in Vanderbilt's football schedule.

To show prospects the best campus experience, Stallings prefers to have their most-wanted recruits on campus when there is a Saturday night football game. Due to VU's decision to play at Michigan to open their 2006 schedule, Vanderbilt is the only SEC school that has not played a home football game.

That changes this Saturday, as the Commodores host SEC rival Arkansas at Dudley Field. The red carpet will be rolled out for what believes are Stallings' two most-wanted recruits in this class.

Alabama point guard Keegan Bell will get the full attention of VU's efforts. The 6-1/180-pound point guard has had the Commodore program in his sights for several months now, and has made at least two unofficial visits to campus this fall.

Bell committed to Georgia this past summer, but backed out after several other SEC schools began to show serious interest in him. Since then, he has received scholarship offers from Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Illinois, among many others.
