Depth chart surprises

Today is the beginning of game week for the defending champion Texas Longhorns, and Mack Brown and staff answered some of the most anticipated questions of the preseason on Monday with the official release of the team's depth chart.

The big storyline ever since the day Vince Young decided to jump to the NFL has been at the quarterback position. Everyone south of the Red River has expressed an opinion on which of the young freshmen - Colt McCoy or Jevan Snead - should take the reins of the Longhorn offense and lead the charge heading into the season. Would one guy take the bull by the horns and assume control, or would the staff enter the season with co-starters at the most important position on the field?

In recent weeks, speculation has had McCoy taking charge of the position and solidifying his spot atop the depth chart, and Brown made it official on Monday morning, naming the redshirt freshman the starter for this weekend's opener against North Texas.

"Colt McCoy will start at quarterback. We're really excited about the progress he's made since the spring, probably as much as I've ever seen from a young quarterback," said Mack Brown.

"We're also thrilled with the way that Jevan has performed … He's one play away. Colt will start on Saturday. You'd like to get Jevan some game work if you can but we will not script that. Winning the game will be the most important thing and we'll decide what we need to do as we go through."
