Countdown to Camp: Solid trio of TEs for UVa
As Countdown to Camp continues its examination each position on the Virginia football team leading into the start of practice, we now arrive at the tight end slot. Few college programs in the country utilize their tight ends as well as UVa, and the Cavaliers boast a group that is arguably as good as any other team in the land can claim. Plain and simple, for our money, Virginia's tight ends are the team's biggest strength heading into the 2006 season.
ON THE ROSTER: Tom Santi (6-foot-5, 238 pounds, junior), Jonathan Stupar (6-3, 245 pounds, junior), John Phillips (6-6, 241 pounds, sophomore), Joe Torchia (6-5, 231 pounds, true freshman).
WHO'S GONE: There were no personnel losses at tight end from 2005.
PROJECTED STARTER: To be honest, it really doesn't matter. UVa coach Al Groh said during spring practice that he doesn't look at Santi, Stupar and Phillips in terms of first-team, second-team and so on. All three guys are very good and all three guys are going to play a lot, maybe even at the same time, as Groh hinted in April.
