A different captain in each

While Brady Quinn and Tom Zbikowski talked, Travis Thomas pedaled.


After finding out he'd been named Notre Dame's special teams captain for the coming season, Thomas didn't wait around for interviews after Wednesday's practice. The junior running back, who carved out a niche in football's third phase last year, hopped on his bike and rode away from the Guglielmino Center side-by-side with James Aldridge.


Far be it for Thomas to grab the spotlight. That's not his style, a big reason why the entire roster voted him a captain for the coming season. While only offensive players voted for their side and defensive players did the same, everyone voted for the special teams captain, which replaces the game-by-game leadership head coach Charlie Weis used last season for the kicking games.
