Perkins Fighting Bumps; Getting Back to All-Purpose Self
Mississippi State's last five quarters have left much to be desired. The Bulldogs gave up 28 points in the final stanza against LSU to fall 59-26 in a game that was much closer than the final tally. They followed that up with a lackluster second half against Bowling Green but were able to flip the result from a L to a W to get back to 3-3. Chalk it up to injuries, if you must, as the Bulldogs have been hobbled since that fourth quarter last week and now they get some rest.
One of those players that could use the rest is running back Ladarius Perkins who seems to be getting back to his usual playing skills after suffering from an ankle injury that he received in the opening game of the season. The senior star running back felt a little beat up early on Saturday, but said that as the game went on he got better and better.
"Tonight I kept irritating (my injury) a little bit but I kept going and as I kept going I got stronger," Perkins said of his hobbled ankle. "I feel like at the end of the game I was pretty much back up to 100%. When I'm not healthy, I'm not quick enough hitting holes and stuff like that. With an ankle injury, it's hard to overcome that quickly. You're out there not playing like you have to because you're scared something might happen to it. Right now I'm healthy and feeling good, just ready for this next week."
Perkins rushed 16 times on Saturday for 83 yards and his first touchdown of his senior year. The Greenville native has posted back-to-back 80-plus-yard games after sitting for most of the first four games. That touchdown was something that he felt he, and his team, really needed this season and on that first drive to set the tempo.
"It felt real good. I came to the sidle line and all my teammates were excited that I finally got in," Perkins said of his long-awaited 2013 touchdown. "The main thing is that we won and the only thing I was really focused on was winning the game."
