Maston ready for Baylor

Timing means everything. T.J. Maston tried to solidify a longer roadtrip for the weekend of Sept. 7. But when the possibilities to visit Miami (Fla.), Kansas State or Marquette didn't work out, he realized an opportunity still existed at Baylor.

When the DeSoto 2014 power forward returned to Baylor two weeks after his first visit he realized that he didn't have to take any other visits.

Maston gave a verbal commitment to the Bears and became the second commit to the 2014 class. Verbal commitments are non-binding. He is expected to sign in the early period which begins Nov. 13.

"It's just environment,'' Maston said. "Just gelling with everybody was important. I can tell this is a family environment. I wasn't expecting to commit. I actually planned on taking all my visits. But everything fell into place.''

This was supposed to be the weekend that Memphis product Leron Black was scheduled to visit, but when committed to Illinois, it opened the spot and Baylor took advantage of the good will that it had built with Maston when he came down for an unofficial visit on Aug. 24.

Maston is a part of a South Dallas County program that consistently wins 25-30 games per season and is contention for a state championship. He averaged 16.6 points per game for the Eagles in the 2012-13 playoffs before DeSoto went out in the Region I quarterfinals.

"I really like the pickup of T.J. Maston because he is the type of glue
guy that I think every winning team needs to have,'' Rivals national analyst Eric Bossi said. " He runs the floor, does a good job on the glass and is a pretty crafty scorer. During July, Maston really took his game to a new level. He was much more aggressive scoring around the rim and he was absolute money with this 12-foot jumper."

Because of that summer, Maston likes the way his inside game is progressing. He just wants to keep improving his ball handling and extending his range.

"I think what I can do is run the floor and can transition,'' he said. "It feels pretty good to be committed. I'm getting used to it.''

This film of T.J. Maston was back in December in a 46-34 win over Hampton (Va.) High on Dec. 28, 2012, at the Holiday Invitaitonal at Raleigh (N.C.) Broughton High. The scouting video shows Maston's (No. 31) box score statistics except fouls. He had 10 points and nine rebounds in that game.
