Previewing Austin Peay at Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt, coming off a 39-35 loss to Ole Miss, faces an Austin Peay team that was shellacked, 45-0, by the Commodores' in-state rival, Tennessee, last Saturday. Here's a look at how the squads match up.

When Vanderbilt runs

The Commodores' 3.8 yards per attempt on 33 carries was not the team's finest effort last week. On the other hand, many of those rushes were short-yardage conversions, including three rushing scores. Still, VU needs to do better than it did last week. Maybe the most encouraging sign was that Jerron Seymour picked up 43 yards on five carries, and showed the flashes that excited VU fans when he was a freshman two years ago. He may pick up a bigger workload this week, but of course will still split reps with Wesley Tate and Brian Kimbrow.

Austin Peay tried to prevent big plays against Tennessee last week, so Tennessee took advantage of its talented offensive line and ran, ran and ran some more against the Governors, to the tune of 315 yards on 52 tries. It's mostly the same bunch that gave up 4.6 yards per carry and 181 yards per game a year ago, given that the Govs return 11 of their top 12 tacklers.
