As Florida State's four quarterbacks battle for the starting job this spring and fall they each will draw on experiences and lessons learned from the NFL-bound EJ Manuel the last few years.
Redshirt freshman Jameis Winston said that last season Manuel was the older brother he never had as the fifth-year senior helped Winston become more comfortable with the offense.
"EJ helped me a lot this first year," Winston said. "He liked the fact that he was my mentor and stuff like that. So he knew he had to do his job, but he also was like 'Alright I've got another little brother right here. Let me help him out and fill him in on some stuff.' He helped me a lot last year."
Redshirt junior Clint Trickett also said that Manuel has been encouraging towards him as he looks to take over the starting role. Trickett also had the luxury of watching how Manuel handled taking over the team when Christian Ponder graduated.
Trickett said he will draw on what both QBs passed down to him as he looks to hold of the trio of young signal callers. He also said they both showed him how to deal with fans clamoring for popular back-ups if he does beat out Winston and the others for the job.
"I know how Ponder and EJ both dealt with and I'll deal with it the same way," Trickett said. "I hear the stuff that's being said and I try to be oblivious to it, but it's a different world we live in with social media and that's just part of it you've just got to deal with it and put it behind you. I'm a tough-skinned kid."
While he's only made two career starts and played in just 17 games, Trickett is the elder statesmen of the QB meeting room. Despite battling the younger players for playing time, Trickett said he won't hold anything back for his teammates if they ask for help.
"I'm not going to be that guy who holds anything back," Trickett said. "I'm going to be the guy that if I want to win, then I'm going to win being the best and if they need something then I'll let them know and I'll still try and beat them."
