Mullen talking Northwestern

For just the second time in school history, Mississippi State is going to its third consecutive bowl game.

The Bulldogs were invited to participate in the 2013 Gator Bowl against Northwestern on Jan. 1. It will be MSU's second appearance in the Gator Bowl in the past three years.

Dan Mullen's Bulldogs walloped Michigan in the 2011 game 52-14 rolling up 485 yards of offense in the process.

"I know our team couldn't be more excited to come back," Mullen said. "We had such a great experience at that bowl game last time. The time that our players had was very special. I couldn't be happier coming back. It's such a great experience for these young men and such a great reward for this senior class. This is my first class that I recruited and they bought into what we were trying to do and it's their second New Year's Day bowl game in the last three years."

While some of the Bulldogs current stars played a part in that 2011 Gator Bowl victory, there are many on the roster who were either redshirting or still in high school when that game took place.

"We have a very, very young team," Mullen said. "When only have 29 guys who are junior or seniors. We're mostly all freshmen and sophomores. When you look at how young our team is, this will be a newer experience for a lot of our guys. Some of our guys weren't with us a few years ago when we went to the Gator Bowl or they were freshmen redshirting and are now on the field performing."

Mississippi State will begin their bowl preparations just by getting some extra work for those young players. With the extra practices, Mullen hopes to get some of his more inexperienced players a majority of the reps early on.
